The best use for DropBox I have found

I’ve had a DropBox account for a couple years now but never really found a use for it. There are all kinds of articles out there listing the The Cleverest Ways to Use DropBox or how to Use DropBox for More Than Just File Syncing. I tried some of these “clever” uses but none of them really seemed to make my life any easier so I kept going back to my trusty flash drive to store and transport files.

It wasn’t until I found a use for DropBox that really saved me time and some frustration that I started using it on a daily basis. The use I found for it that made me a DropBox fanboy was syncing my web development projects across multiple computers.

I use Dreamweaver for all my sites and develop on 3 different machines, a desktop and laptop at home, as well as a desktop at the office. I used to keep all the websites I was currently working on and ones I had already completed on my flash drive. In hindsight this isn’t the best option, I wasn’t good at backing it up and if anything ever happened to that drive I would have been Screwed (yes, with a capital S). Another problem I was always running into was I would use my flash drive at home working on a site, I would get to work the next day and realize I left the drive in my computer at home. I would have to try and remember which files I changed and grab them off of my live site, or if I didn’t upload them from home I was just stuck. This was time consuming and happened quite frequently.

So here are the benefits of using DropBox with Dreamweaver:

  1. I always have the latest copy of any site on the computer I am currently using.
  2. If I’m not at one of my computers I can still access all my files via the web at
  3. Versioning!!!
  4. No extra steps involved.

Below are the steps I used to integrate DropBox and Dreamweaver:

I began by setting up a new folder in the root of my DropBox folder called “websites”. Inside the websites folder is a folder for each site I have created with the files related to the site. You probably already have a structure like this created somewhere else, you will just need to move it into your DropBox folder.

The last step is to tell Dreamweaver where the site is. This step is the same wether you are creating a new site or moved an existing one into your DropBox folder. You just to make sure the “Local Site Folder” points to wherever your site files are in your DropBox folder.

That’s it!! Now you can edit files on one computer and as long as you save your changes you can open that file on another computer and pick up where you left off.

Have you discovered any other good uses for DropBox? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Hi,

Came across your interesting page regarding using Dreamweaver across two machines. I currently use Dreamweaver on my PC and laptop, but the laptop has only been coming into play when I’ve been away from home. At these times I have been using a memory stick to transfer over the up to date setup.
As I have just recently purchased a new laptop which is equivalent to the PC, I thought I should use it more than just when away.
Don’t know if you use Outlook for your mail, but as I do I found this to be a problem with two machines, and thought you may be interested in how I got round it.
I am currently signed up to IDriveSync (free version). To get it up and running, I simply moved the Outlook pst folder from the PC dir location into IDriveSync and removed it from the laptop. When Outlook is first opened an error message pops up stating that the files is missing, which then allows you to browse your PC dir. Simply direct it to IDriveSync and then it works normally, do the same on the laptop and the two then synchronise.
As regard Dreamweaver, would this work in the same manner? Just relocate the file containing the site pages to IDriveSync and direct Dreamweaver to it, or am I hoping for too much here?

Look forward to hearing from you.

  3. Don’t forget that if you are on a Mac and are also running Time Machine backups you will also have access to a full history of incremental backups of your DropBox so if you need to go back two days, two weeks (or even two years?) you can roll your website back (or forwards). Perfect for that moment you realise those pesky ruskis have been into your site.

  4. Skilled video editing software program is a must have instrument for serious video editors.
Each single clip, video, and still image needs to be uploaded to YouTube before it can be
